Mexican journalists began protests throughout the country on
Tuesday, January 25, to denounce the recent murders of three well-known
journalists. The communication professionals demanded that the government take
immediate measures and end the impunity that has characterized the murders of
their colleagues.
Photographers, noteros, presenters and other workers
associated with the media, regardless of their political leanings, met on
Tuesday to protest the critical situation that Mexico is experiencing regarding
the censorship that mafia groups intend to impose, often in complicity with the
local and federal governments.
Two journalists were murdered in the border city of Tijuana
in the first weeks of the year. Police photographer Margarito Martínez was shot
to death in front of his home on January 17, while reporter Lourdes Maldonado
López was found shot to death in her car last Sunday, sparking rejection from
the entire community.
At the same time, reporter José Luis Gamboa was stabbed
earlier this month in the state of Veracruz.
